DESIGNING SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION

About the Program

This exhibition is part of a new initiative at the University of Houston that equips students with the knowledge and tools to design for sustainability. Through hands-on research and collaboration, students tackle real-world issues of waste and overconsumption in three industries that shape our daily lives: Food, Beauty & Personal Care, and Fashion.

Partners & Support

This initiative is made possible through collaboration across the University of Houston and beyond. Supported by VentureWell and enriched by partnerships with innovation and entrepreneurship centers, the program connects students with the expertise, resources, and mentorship needed to turn ideas into action.

Why Sustainable Design Matters

Designers have a responsibility and an opportunity to rethink these systems. By combining sustainable design principles with innovative thinking, we can reduce waste, conserve resources, and create products and services that make a lasting difference.

Food Waste

Over one-third of food in the U.S. is wasted, contributing to environmental strain.

Beauty Industry Waste

The beauty and personal care industry produces excessive packaging and waste.

Fashion Pollution

The fashion industry fuels pollution, production, and textile waste on a massive scale.

Our Approach to Sustainable Design

Students in this program learn to approach sustainability not just as a material choice, but as a systemic challenge.

Designing and prototyping sustainable solutions.

Researching critical waste and consumption issues.

Testing ideas with users and refining for real impact.

Showcasing outcomes through their journey.

DESIGNING SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION

Our Impact

From reducing food waste to reimagining fashion supply chains, our students explore bold solutions to today’s most pressing sustainability challenges. Each project represents creativity, research, and a commitment to shaping a more responsible future.

Tools From Venturewell

Our sustainable design course is supported by VentureWell, providing us with practical tools and frameworks to design products with real-world impact.

These tools help students and teams think beyond individual features and consider the full system around a product—from materials and energy use to manufacturing, use, and end-of-life. By applying whole-system design and sustainability-focused exercises, we learn how to identify high-impact opportunities and make responsible design decisions early in the process.
