To design a product solution for adults who often cook or go grocery shopping that provides food organization, expiration date reminders, and meal prep/grocery shopping support to solve the problem of food spoilage caused by forgotten items in refrigerators and pantries.

Problem Statement

Many households often forget about what is inside their refrigerators and pantries, which can result in food spoiling/ expiring and contribute to food waste.

Background Statistics on Food Waste

Food waste is a major issue in the U.S., with 40% of food lost and the average person discarding 238 pounds annually. Key causes include spoilage before use, forgetfulness, and disinterest in leftovers. Better fridge organization and labeling can help reduce waste.

Competitive Analysis

This comparison highlights four smart kitchen products, each designed to improve food storage and prep. Greensaver keeps produce fresh with carbon filters, while Samsung’s Smart Refrigerator offers remote monitoring via touchscreen. Removable labels provide a simple way to track food dates, and PantryChic dispenses ingredients for precise meal prep.

User Journey

This journey map highlights how users interact with Samsung’s “View Inside” fridge feature. While the touchscreen and app are easy to use, limited camera views and a complex inventory process cause frustration. Key opportunities include better item recognition, expiration tracking, and simpler navigation.

Technology Trend: Sustainability

This slide explores sustainable tech trends through physical-digital integration. It highlights RFID/NFC for secure data transfer and AR/VR for immersive, interactive experiences. Together, these tools enable smarter systems, real-time analytics, and enhanced user engagement.

Survey (13 Participants)

This survey reveals that many people struggle with food spoilage due to forgetfulness and lack of tracking tools, leading to wasted money. Most participants don’t use systems to manage food expiration but are open to adopting new technologies for better fridge and pantry organization.

User Interviews To Find Pain Points

User interviews reveal common pain points in fridge organization: Peggy struggles with shared food tracking, Madison lacks container systems, and Trang finds it hard to monitor expiration dates. All three want smart solutions to simplify food management and reduce waste.

Value Propostions

Four value proposition to reduce food waste: reminders for food expiration, tools for fridge/pantry organization, meal prep support, and smart grocery planning. Each concept uses tech to help users stay aware of what they have and use it efficiently.

First value proposition is designed to help heavy grocery shoppers like Luna manage food expiration. By scanning items during checkout, the app builds a smart inventory, tracks expiration dates, and sends timely reminders—making food management easier and reducing waste.

This value proposition focuses on helping unorganized home cooks streamline their fridge and pantry setup through smart, minimal design.

It introduces three sleek product concepts—modular containers, intuitive labels, and compact dividers—that make food storage more visible, accessible, and trackable.

By combining geometric aesthetics with practical features like sensors and scales, the system transforms cluttered spaces into organized, efficient environments.

This value proposition centers on Meal Prep Support for new cooks. The MyFoodie app recommends recipes based on inventory and preferences, helping users plan meals efficiently and reduce waste. With features like a meal calendar, step-by-step instructions, and expiration-based suggestions.

This value proposition focuses on Grocery Shopping Support for users, streamlines the entire shopping journey—from personalized meal recommendations to barcode scanning and inventory syncing. It helps users build smart shopping lists, track missing ingredients, and even locate items in-store, making grocery trips faster, more organized, and tailored to their needs.

User flow charts

user flow charts for a portfolio app, tailored to Luna, test users, admins, and general users. Each flow outlines frustrations, goals, and value propositions—like clearer guidance for test users or streamlined tasks for admins—helping improve usability across different user types.

MyFoodie App Prototype

MyFoodie app prototype, built from four user flow charts addressing food expiration, pantry organization, meal prep, and grocery shopping. Using Figma, each flow was tailored to specific personas, demonstrating how the app solves real user problems and promotes freshness through smart, intuitive design.
